Description

Smooth greensnakes are one to two feet long. They are easily recognizable by their smooth, bright green scales. They have pale bellies and a yellow chin. They are very slender in build. Juveniles may appear gray in color.

Habitat

Greensnakes live in uplands and open habitats such as woodlands, fields, and wetlands.

Behavior

These snakes hibernate over the winter in burrows. They eat insects and arachnids, and are preyed on by raccoons, foxes, and large birds. They primarily rely on camouflage, however they will flee if threatened. They release an unpleasant smell when handled, and rarely will bite. In the summer, they lay three to ten eggs.
